The Celebrities Barred From The Oscars And What Led To It

The Oscars are Hollywood’s biggest night, where the glitz, glamour, and golden trophies take center stage. But not everyone gets to keep their seat at the table.

Over the years, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has shown that no amount of fame can shield someone from accountability.

From shocking on-stage moments to serious legal violations, these are the celebrities who found themselves permanently or temporarily locked out of Hollywood’s most prestigious event.

Nobody expected the 2022 Oscars to turn into a live action drama, but here we are.

When comedian Chris Rock cracked a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, referencing the movie G.I. Jane, Will Smith walked onstage and slapped him in front of millions of viewers worldwide.

The Academy acted swiftly. Smith was banned from attending all Academy events, including the Oscars, for 10 full years.

He had actually won Best Actor that same night for King Richard. How wild is that?

The incident sparked massive debates about boundaries, accountability, and what it means to defend your family.

2. Harvey Weinstein — When Power Met Its Match

For decades, Harvey Weinstein was one of the most powerful producers in Hollywood.

Films like Pulp Fiction and Shakespeare in Love carried his fingerprints. Behind the scenes, however, a very different and deeply troubling story was unfolding.

In 2017, investigative journalists broke open a wave of harassment and assault allegations against him, involving dozens of women in the industry.

The Academy expelled him almost immediately, calling his behavior “repugnant” and “antithetical” to everything the organization stands for.

His expulsion helped ignite the global #MeToo movement. Sometimes one story changes everything, and this one absolutely did.

3. Carmine Caridi — The First To Be Shown The Door

Where most Oscar ban stories involve serious criminal behavior, Carmine Caridi’s case is a different kind of scandal entirely.

He holds the dubious honor of being the very first person ever expelled from the Academy, back in 2004.

Caridi, known for his role in The Godfather Part II, shared DVD screeners of Oscar-nominated films with a bootlegger.

Those screeners ended up circulating illegally, violating the Academy’s strict distribution rules in a major way.

No dramatic courtroom moment here, just one bad decision that cost him his membership permanently.

4. Roman Polanski — A Decades-Long Controversy

Roman Polanski has had one of cinema’s most complicated legacies.

Celebrated for films like Chinatown and The Pianist, he also has a deeply troubling criminal history that the world has never forgotten.

Convicted in 1977 for unlawful intercourse with an underage girl, Polanski fled the United States before sentencing and continued making films in Europe.

The Academy tolerated his membership for decades, even awarding him Best Director in 2003 for The Pianist. However, in 2018, the Academy finally voted to expel him.

Better late than never, though many argued it was far too late.

5. Adam Kimmel — Expelled For A Hidden Past

Cinematographer Adam Kimmel built a solid career behind the camera, working on notable projects like Capote and Never Let Me Go.

However, in 2021, the Academy uncovered something from his past that could not be ignored or excused.

Kimmel was revealed to have a serious criminal record involving minors. Once the Academy confirmed the information, his expulsion followed quickly.

The organization made clear that professional accomplishments, no matter how impressive, do not override the responsibility to protect human dignity.

Though his name may be unfamiliar to casual moviegoers, his case remains an important chapter in the Academy’s ongoing accountability story.

6. Bill Cosby — A Comedy Legend’s Shocking Fall

For generations, Bill Cosby was “America’s Dad,” beloved for The Cosby Show and his warm, family-friendly comedy.

The reality behind that image, however, turned out to be deeply disturbing and heartbreaking for many fans.

Cosby was convicted in 2018 for drugging and assaulting Andrea Constand in 2004. That same year, the Academy expelled him alongside Roman Polanski, reinforcing its commitment to ethical conduct.

Though his conviction was later overturned on procedural grounds, the Academy’s decision to remove him stood firm.

If the golden statue represents excellence, the Academy made clear it also must represent integrity.
