10 Movie Couples With Little Chemistry, Ranked By Awkwardness

Romance shows up, the music swells, and somehow the chemistry forgets to arrive. Two big stars share the screen, deliver their lines, and still feel like they just met five minutes ago and already ran out of things to say.

Budgets, scripts, and good lighting try their best, but the spark stays missing, leaving behind pairings that feel more awkward than swoon-worthy.

1. Valerian and Laureline – Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets (2017)

Two people sit across from each other on a first date that feels like it happened by accident.

Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne were handed a galaxy-spanning adventure along with a romance meant to spark.

Reviews piled up calling it a mismatch, with critics circling the same issue again and again. Awkwardness never builds into anything, landing more like a damp match that refuses to catch.

Most expensive chemistry miss in space fits the description.

2. Elise Clifton-Ward And Frank Tupelo – The Tourist (2010)

Two of the biggest names in Hollywood, one boat ride through Venice, and somehow zero sparks on the water.

Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus pointed directly to the lack of chemistry between Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, arguing that scenery and star power could not make up for it.

Jolie delivered cool elegance and Depp brought rumpled charm, but the two never quite found the same frequency. Like two radio stations playing at once, you hear both but neither comes in clear.

3. Anakin Skywalker And Padme Amidala – Star Wars: Episode II Attack Of The Clones (2002)

“I don’t like sand” is now shorthand for a whole era of awkward, movie romance.

Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman were handed one of the franchise’s most important romances, and many viewers and critics found the romantic scenes stiff. The dialogue was famously clunky, but reviewers were equally quick to flag the missing spark between the two leads.

A galaxy far, far away never felt quite this uncomfortable to visit.

4. Magic Mike And Maxandra Mendoza – Magic Mike’s Last Dance (2023)

Charisma has always carried Channing Tatum’s brand, which made the RogerEbert.com note about “no chemistry whatsoever” with Salma Hayek land like a cold splash of water.

On their own, both performers bring real magnetism. Together, the energy shifted into something closer to a business meeting than a slow dance.

Even with choreography and glitter everywhere, the one element the story needed most never quite showed up.

5. Anastasia Steele And Christian Grey – Fifty Shades Of Grey (2015)

Romantic tension carries the whole premise, which becomes a problem when it keeps fading like steam from a cooling cup of coffee. Despite both being watchable performers, Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan never quite sell the attraction.

Critics kept circling the same note, pointing out how the connection failed to feel real.

Story needed a pull strong enough to shrink the room. Instead, nothing shifted.

6. Kelly And Justin – From Justin To Kelly (2003)

Fresh off back-to-back American Idol seasons, a beach musical landed in their hands with instructions to fall in love on camera.

Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini stepped into it, yet even reviewers who found the film harmless and cheerful pointed to the pairing as the weakest link.

More than once, “nonexistent” showed up as the word of choice. Winning a singing competition and creating on-screen romance turn out to be two very different skill sets.

7. Brian Gilcrest And Allison Ng – Aloha (2015)

Natural beauty does a lot of the work, yet even a setting like Hawaii could not supply the missing spark.

On paper, a movie couple should have come together effortlessly, and Bradley Cooper with Emma Stone certainly looked the part.

Believable romantic connection never quite showed up, no matter how perfect the backdrop appeared. Even the bluest sky cannot carry a love story on its own.

8. Dana Randall And Jim Preston – Passengers (2016)

Already a lonely place, space sets a tough stage for any romance trying to feel warm and lived-in.

Energy and likability came through in both performances, with Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt bringing plenty to the surface.

Even then, the romance remained divisive, especially because the film asked the audience to accept it as a sweeping, once-in-a-lifetime connection. Some critics questioned the pairing, while Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus argued that the two leads actually did work well together, making the larger story the bigger problem.

9. Matt And Gia – Love Is In The Air (2023)

Romantic movies rise or fall on the central pairing, and at least some critics felt Love Is in the Air never made that connection click.

Joshua Sasse and Delta Goodrem both bring natural appeal, which only made the flatness between them stand out more. Entire premise depends on two people feeling irresistible to each other, so a lukewarm response to that dynamic becomes a major problem.

10. Chris Brander And Jamie Palamino – Just Friends (2005)

Blunt as ever, Roger Ebert wrote there was “not a spark of chemistry” between Ryan Reynolds and Amy Smart.

At the center of Just Friends sits the idea that these two share an undeniable pull toward each other. Comedic timing from Reynolds was already sharp, and Smart stayed consistently likable throughout.

Even then, the romantic glue never quite set, turning “will they or won’t they” into something closer to “do they even want to?”

Reactions to on-screen chemistry are inherently subjective, and individual viewers may respond differently to performances, character dynamics, and romantic storylines.
